DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class supervises and participates in the installation, maintenance and repair of Town street lighting, traffic signal, and traffic safety device projects.  The employee will supervise and participate in skilled electrical work relative to the maintenance and repair of street lighting and traffic safety devices.  Work involves determining work methods and procedures as well as participating in the assignments.  Supervision may be exercised over equipment operators, maintenance mechanics and laborers.  Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrative supervisor in a traffic department.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Supervises crews and participates in the installation, maintenance and repair of street lighting, traffic signals, and traffic safety devices in Town roadways and parking lots;

            Supervises and participates in underground trenching to install conduit for electrical lines for street lighting and traffic signals;

            Supervises and participates in skilled electrical work in the installation, repair and maintenance of traffic safety devices;

            Supervises crews and participates in the restoration of roadways affected by traffic safety projects, including backfilling, installing and compacting asphalt;

            Schedules and coordinates the use of staff, materials and equipment;

            Supervises crews and participates in painting traffic markings on roadways and erecting and repairing traffic control signs in conformance with NYS laws and regulations;

             Keeps records and prepares reports of work activities and materials used.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and equipment common to electrical work of street lighting and traffic signal projects; good knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions in conformance with NYS laws, regulations and local Town ordinances; skill in the use and care of tools, materials and equipment used in performing skilled electrical work; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of crews and equipment in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to understand, interpret and effectively carry out written or oral instructions accompanied by traffic signal plans; ability to keep records and make reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and three (3) years of experience in the performance of skilled electrical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of street lighting and traffic safety devices.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, candidates may be required to possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle to be operated.
