DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE
CLASS
An employee in this class plans,
assigns and directs the work of a substantial number of employees engaged in
the operation and maintenance of school transportation equipment. The work involves establishing bus routes and
time schedules for each school, as well as supervising the maintenance, repair
and inspection of all vehicles in the district.
The incumbent is responsible for reviewing the operation of the
transportation unit and for acting as an advisor on school transportation
matters. The incumbent is responsible
for the preparation of all required reports and records of the transportation
unit. Work is performed under the
general supervision of an administrative supervisor who reviews the work
through conferences, written reports and the results of state inspections. Does
related work as required.
Plans,
assigns, coordinates and directs the work of school bus drivers, mechanics and
other transportation employees engaged in maintaining a large school
transportation program;
Prepares and maintains a district
transportation map and plans school bus routes, stops, loading and unloading
areas and driver schedules for all district schools; may use computerized
scheduling techniques;
Assigns the cleaning, servicing and minor
repair of suburbans, buses and other equipment; plans and assigns major repair,
replacement and rebuilding of bus engines, transmissions, hydraulic and
electrical systems in the school garage or outside garages;
Prepares personnel, budget, maintenance
and state inspection reports and records; makes out requisitions and
specification for all transportation equipment, parts and supplies;
Advises on present and future transportation
needs and costs; processes complaints and special requests from parents,
students and school officials.
Insures that school district
transportation personnel as well as outside contractors perform under the same
rules and regulations and in accordance with their contracts.

Comprehensive
knowledge of the operation, maintenance and inspection practices, procedures,
and policies governing school transportation programs; comprehensive knowledge
of the geography of the school district and of state laws and safety
regulations covering the operation of suburbans and school buses; thorough
knowledge of the maintenance and preparation of accurate transportation reports
and records; good knowledge of effective supervisory techniques; skill in the
operation of school buses and suburbans; ability to plan, assign and supervise
the work of a substantial number of employees performing various maintenance
and operational functions in a manner conducive to full performance and high
morale; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
parents, students, school officials and other persons associated with the
school transportation program; ability to prepare a variety of written reports
and to maintain accurate records; ability to express oneself clearly and
concisely, both orally and in writing; good judgment; courtesy; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a New York State or
Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree, and two
(2) years of management experience in the operation, scheduling and maintenance
of a bus transportation system; or,
b) Graduation from a standard senior high school
or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of
management experience in the operation, scheduling and maintenance of a bus
transportation system.
NOTE: Additional experience will be
substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
