FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An
employee in this class administers the transportation program for a large
school district having contractual agreements with private bus corporations. The
incumbent performs responsible administrative work in reviewing, recommending
and overseeing contractual agreements with private bus corporations. Work
involves the responsibility for laying out bus routes, answering parental
complaints, maintaining financial controls and other duties similar to those
performed in the School Transportation Supervisor class. Work is performed
under the general supervision of the school district administrator, business
administrator and the school board, and is reviewed through reports submitted.
Does related work as required.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES
Prepares and maintains a district
transportation map and plans school bus routes, stops, loading and unloading
areas and driver schedules for all district schools;
Advises the Board of Education on
present and future transportation needs and costs; processes complaints and
special requests from parents, students and school officials;
Arranges special bus schedules for
athletic events or field trips;
Reviews bids from private bus
companies, makes comparisons with other bids and advises school boards on the
adequacy of the bid.

PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the practices, procedures and policies governing the operation of
school transportation programs; thorough knowledge of the geography of the
school district and the State laws and safety regulations covering the
operation of suburban and school buses; thorough knowledge of the preparation
and maintenance of accurate transportation records and reports; good knowledge
of maintenance and inspection practices and policies governing school
transportation programs; ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with parents, students, school officials and other persons
associated with a school transportation program; ability to prepare a variety
of written reports and to maintain accurate records; ability to express oneself
clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with an
Associate's Degree, and two (2) years of management experience in the operation
and scheduling of a bus transportation system; or,
b) Graduation from a standard senior
high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4)
years of management experience in the operation and scheduling of a bus
transportation system.
NOTE: Additional relevant experience will be
substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
