DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs responsible administrative work in planning, recommending, overseeing contractual agreements with private bus corporations and implementing transportation programs for Suffolk BOCES and participants who are enrolled in their programs.  The primary focus of a position in this class is to analyze, review and plan transportation programs in order to provide quality program services on a cost effective basis. Supervision is exercised over School Transportation Coordinators employed by BOCES and assigned to component districts.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Plans, coordinates and directs all operations of the Regional Transportation office;

         Oversees supervision of staff located in component districts;

         Sets fees for services, coordinates grants;

          Prepares and/or reviews curriculum for all safety programs.  Coordinates instruction of programs, including selecting appropriate staff;

          Prepares budgets, oversees the preparation of purchase orders; reviews billing and invoices.  Authorizes service and billing adjustments;

          Provides districts with safety reports, site evaluations and child safety zone studies, as requested;

          Prepares bids, Requests for Proposals (RFP’S) for BOCES or individual districts, as requested;

          Meets with component school district personnel to secure commitments to utilize services of the department;

            Responsible for all contractor relations including transportation contract negotiations.

 

FULL PERRFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the practices, procedures and policies governing the operation of school transportation programs; comprehensive knowledge of the geography of  the school districts and the State laws and safety regulations covering the operation of suburban and school buses; comprehensive knowledge of the preparation and maintenance of accurate transportation records and reports; comprehensive knowledge of maintenance and inspection practices and policies governing school transportation programs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, students, school officials and other persons associated with a school transportation programs; ability to prepare a variety of written reports and to maintain accurate records; ability to express oneself clearly      and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition Commensurate with the demands of the position. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE  

             Graduation from an accredited university with a Bachelor’s Degree, and six (6) years of experience in the operation of a large transportation system, at least two (2) years of which must have been at a supervisory level.
