DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs technical work involving the installation, servicing, diagnosis and repair of computerized telecommunication equipment which includes communication lines, multiplexers, modems, terminals and printers.  Routine repairs and maintenance are performed independently.  Assignments are less technical in nature than those of the Telecommunications Specialists.  Work is performed under the supervision of a technical supervisor or the direction of an administrator.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Delivers and picks up various telecommunications equipment, such as modems, statistical and intelligent multiplexers, CRT and printer terminals, card readers, and keypunch equipment from remote sites;

Assists in the installation and testing of new data communication lines, multiplexers, modems, terminals and printers;

Assists in identifying and correcting technical problems of telecommunications equipment;

Assists in constructing data communications cabling for use in the telecommunications network;

Assists in maintaining highest possible up-time on multiplexers, modems, lines and terminals;

Prepares trouble logs and preventive maintenance logs for users;

Visits user sites, checking reliability of equipment and customer satisfaction;

Maintains effective working relationships with computer center staff; school district personnel, and equipment vendors;

Keeps records of all maintenance and repair work and submits periodic reports to supervisors;

        

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the methods used in testing, maintaining and repairing electronic, electrical and electromechanical equipment; knowledge of the operating characteristics of computerized telecommunications equipment; some knowledge of Federal Communication Commission rules and regulations governing electronic transmission and receiving equipment; knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions which must be taken when working on electronic, electrical and eclectro-mechanical equipment; skill in the use of electrical repair tools and testing equipment; ability to isolate problems in multiplexers, modems, lines and terminals and to make routing corrective repairs; ability to solder and construct cabling; ability to read and interpret electronic schematics; ability to follow complex technical instructions; ability to maintain effective working relationships with persons using equipment and equipment vendors; ability to maintain accurate records and prepare written reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN COMPETITIVE  

         Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of computerized telecommunications equipment.

 

NOTE:  Education in the field of Computer Science may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of one (1) year.
