DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE
CLASS
The
work involves performing highly skilled technical work in the use and repair of
remote and local data communications equipment. The employee in this class performs highly skilled technical work
in the diagnosis, repair, modification, installation, maintenance and operation
of computerized communications equipment.
Direct supervision may be exercised over subordinate technical and/or
clerical personnel. Work is performed
under the general supervision of an administrative supervisor and is reviewed
through conferences, submission of reports and evaluation of work performed. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Deliver,
install and test modems, statistical and intelligent multiplexers, CRT and
printer terminals, card readers, and keypunch equipment;
Solder
and wire appropriate cables and connectors associated with remote equipment;
Isolate telecommunications problems from the
switched telephone
network (DDD) or leased
telephone lines, from the modems and multiplexers, from the remote input-output
equipment;
Isolate and diagnose problems emanating from
the computer site telecommunications equipment, which includes multiplexers and
modems,
and a Central Processing Unit
host (select-intelligent-integrated communicator-interface to the computer
systems);
Diagnose
communications software and host computers; set appropriate terminal speeds;
test software programs;
Prepare
specifications and perform bid analyses for telecommunications equipment;
Assist computer terminal users with technical
difficulties.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES,
SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the
methods used in repairing, maintaining, testing and operating telecommunication
equipment; thorough knowledge of the use and servicing of equipment including
oscilloscopes, digital voltmeters, data analyzers and transmission testing
equipment; thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
necessary while using electronic equipment; good knowledge of Federal
Communications Commission rules and regulations governing electronic
transmission and receiving equipment; skill in soldering, fraying and analyzing
electronic circuit boards
and components; ability to
detect causes of malfunction of equipment and to make necessary repairs;
ability to maintain accurate reports and to prepare work reports; ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators,
instructors and users of equipment; ability to supervise the work of
subordinate technical personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and
high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma
and four (4) years of experience in the repair, maintenance and operation of
computerized telecommunications equipment.
NOTE: Education
in the field of Computer Science may be substituted for experience on a
year-for-year basis up to a maximum of three (3) years.
