Distinguishing
features of the class
An employee in this class will be responsible for the daily
operation and maintenance of telephonic telecommunications systems within a
school district. The incumbent will work independently to install, maintain,
and repair all telephonic telecommunication equipment. The employee in this
position exercises considerable initiative and independence in the performance
of duties. Work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor.

Typical
work activities
Installs and maintains telephone
lines for the purpose of monitoring utilities, fire alarms, burglar alarms
etc.;
Troubleshoots and repairs telephone
lines, fiber optic cables, T1 lines, and equipment;
Programs telephone lines utilizing
necessary computer software;
Adds, deletes, and relocates
telephone modules;
Analyzes and resolves all
communication software issues;
Repairs all underground cable splices;
Supervises all work performed by
any contractor pertaining to the telecommunications system.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of testing, maintenance, operation
and repair of equipment used in the telecommunications and software system;
thorough knowledge of principals and practices of telecommunication
installations, cable splicing, CAT 5 wiring, and fiber optic cable
installation; ability to detect defects in telephone system and determine
necessary corrective measures; ability to follow oral and written instructions;
ability to keep simple and accurate records; ability to supervise the work of subordinate technical personnel in a
manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to work
independently; physical conditions commensurate with the demands of the
position.
Minimum
Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of a high
school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of experience in the maintenance,
repair and installation of telephonic telecommunications equipment. One year
of the above experience must include splicing and maintaining fiber optic
cables.
