DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in
this class participates in technical operations and maintenance activities
associated with audiovisual and information technology systems in a school
district. The incumbent advises users on
state-of-the-art equipment and its suitability to various educational
environments. Some independence and initiative are required in the performance
of duties. Supervision may be exercised
over student and staff personnel engaged in the operation, maintenance, repair
and design of equipment. Work is
performed under general supervision and is reviewed by either administrative or
higher level technical personnel. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Participates
in the design, modification, operation, maintenance and repair of audiovisual
equipment;
Installs,
tests, modifies, operates, maintains, and repairs audiovisual, computer and
other information technology equipment;
May
install, maintain and repair security systems;
Installs,
maintains, and repairs public address systems, projectors and interactive
whiteboards;
Participates in a preventive maintenance
program designed to increase the longevity of equipment;
Assists in
evaluating appropriateness of existing equipment;
Recommends
modifications and/or purchases to administrators;
Assists in
coordinating the technical activities of theatrical productions requiring the
use of complex lighting and sound systems;
Attends
training sessions and seminars on new equipment, to ascertain its functions,
adaptability to existing systems, and maintenance and repair procedures;
Maintains
records of purchases, repairs and maintenance, and usage of equipment and supplies;
May set up
sound and lighting equipment for events such as theater productions, meetings,
assemblies, etc.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the methods used in the design,
repair, maintenance, testing and operation of electronic and audiovisual
equipment; thorough knowledge of information
technology systems and principles; good knowledge of electronic hardware and
software, including capabilities and compatibilities; good knowledge of the use
and servicing of equipment; good knowledge of the occupational hazards and
safety precautions necessary while using high voltage equipment; good knowledge of Federal Communications
Commission rules and regulations governing electronic transmission and
receiving equipment; ability to detect
the causes of break downs in electronic equipment utilizing equipment including
multitesters and to repair broken equipment; ability to organize and maintain
accurate and complete records, educational and resource material; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with an
Associate’s Degree in information technology or computer science, and one (1)
year of experience in the use, diagnosis and repair of audiovisual, computer
and other information technology equipment; or,
b) Graduation from a standard senior high school
or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and three (3) years of
experience in the use, diagnosis and repair of audiovisual, computer and other
information technology equipment; or,
c) An equivalent combination of education and
experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).

Competitive
