DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class coordinates and directs technical operations and maintenance activities associated with the use of audiovisual, video and computerized systems in a school district. The incumbent advises users on state-of-the-art equipment and its suitability to various educational environments. Considerable independence and initiative is required in the performance of duties. Supervision is exercised over student and staff personnel engaged in the operation, maintenance, repair and design of equipment. Work is reviewed by educational administrators through conferences, written reports and observation of technical operations. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Directs
the activities of personnel engaged in the design modification, operation,
maintenance and repair of electro-mechanical and electronic audio-visual equipment,
microcomputer and video equipment;
Supervises the
installation, testing, modification, operation, maintenance and repair of
micro-computer, audio visual and video equipment;
Repairs, tests, modifies, operates and maintains audiovisual,
microcomputer and video equipment;
Establishes and coordinates a preventive maintenance program
designed to increase the longevity of equipment;
Meets with teachers and administrators to determine educational
equipment requirements;
Researches and evaluates availability and appropriateness of
existing and new equipment; recommends vendors used for purchase and bid items;
Coordinates the technical activities and calendar schedule of
theatrical productions requiring the use of complex lighting and sound systems;
Meets with professional producers as well as school district
personnel prior to performances, to determine particular audio-visual
prerequisites;
Attends training sessions and seminars on new equipment, to
ascertain its functions, adaptability to existing systems, and maintenance and
reparation procedures;
Maintains records of purchases, repairs and maintenance, and
usage of equipment and supplies.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive
knowledge of the methods used in the design, construction, repair, maintenance,
testing and operation of electronic and electro-mechanical audio-visual
equipment; comprehensive knowledge of electronic data processing systems and
principles; thorough knowledge of electronic data processing hardware and
software, including capabilities and compatibilities; thorough knowledge of the
use and servicing of equipment including delayed sweep oscilloscope, sweep
generators, audio generators, electronic schematics and Voltage Ohm Meter; thorough knowledge of the occupational
hazards and safety precautions necessary while using high voltage
equipment; good knowledge of Federal
Communications Commission rules and regulations governing electronic
transmission and receiving equipment;
ability to detect the causes of breakdowns in electrical and electronic
equipment and to repair broken equipment;
ability to organize and maintain accurate and complete records,
educational and resource material;
ability to organize and supervise the work of technical and clerical
personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
a) Graduation from a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
Degree, and one (1) year of experience in the use, diagnosis and repair of data
processing and audiovisual equipment; or,
b) Graduation from a
standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma,
and five (5) years experience in the use, diagnosis and repair of data
processing and audio visual equipment; or,
c) An equivalent combination
of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
