DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class coordinates and directs the creation of audio-visual and written presentations, the installation of computer hardware and software systems and the diagnosis and repair of computer problems. The incumbent is expected to exercise a considerable degree of independent judgment and initiative in the design, development and presentation of information through diverse media. Supervision may be exercised over a small technical staff. Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative superior and is reviewed through periodic conferences and inspections of completed work. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Directs the activities of personnel engaged in the installation, modification and support of microcomputers and related peripheral equipment;

         Schedules, organizes and designs media projects;

         Supervises the development and production of films, videos and brochures;

         Writes, produces, directs and edits television and video presentations;

         Designs and installs agency-specific software;

         Evaluates software programs and recommends the purchase of new software and equipment;

         Assists in the installation of computer networks;

         May design and develop websites.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques used in the production of films, videos and other promotional materials; comprehensive knowledge of the use and operation of microcomputers and related peripheral equipment; thorough knowledge of the operation of videotape recorders, projectors, television cameras and other related audio-visual and photographic equipment; good knowledge of current literature, sources of information and technical developments in the computer field; ability to create and edit scripts and other written materials, ability to diagnose computer problems and develop workable solutions; ability to supervise personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

 

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN COMPETITIVE

         Either:

           (a) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Communications, Computer Technology, Graphic Design or a related field and four (4) years of experience in media production, website development, authoring interactive training, computer graphics or a related field; or,

         (b)  Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience in media production, website development, authoring interactive training, computer graphics or a related field.

 

         PROMOTIONAL

         Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Media Development Specialist.
