DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class performs work of a technical
nature primarily involving the servicing and repair of speaker systems, film
projectors, tape recorders, television receivers, teaching machines and other
audiovisual equipment used by a school district or municipal agency. Work consists of orientating and instructing
personnel in the operation of this equipment, in addition to serving as a
technical advisor to administrative supervisors in the evaluation of proposed
audiovisual equipment. The employee's work is performed under the supervision
of a qualified supervisor who reviews work through periodic consultations and
inspections of equipment. Does related
work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Tests and adjusts speakers, microphones, tape recorders,
film and slide projectors, television receivers, cameras and other related
audiovisual equipment;
Repairs
and replaces motors, motor drives, switches, fuses and wiring of electronic,
electrical and electro-mechanical equipment;
Requisitions
parts as necessary;
Inspects,
cleans, oils and replaces worn equipment parts as part of a program of regular
preventative maintenance;
Assists in
the instruction of new personnel regarding the operation of various types of
audiovisual equipment;
Inspects,
splices and repairs broken films and film strips;
Maintains
a record of all maintenance and repair work and submits periodic reports to a
technical supervisor;
May
supervise Audio Visual Aides;
May be
required to attend training sessions and seminars on new equipment or equipment
usage and repair.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the methods used
in testing, maintaining and repairing electronic, electrical and
electro-mechanical equipment; thorough knowledge of the operating
characteristics of audiovisual equipment; good knowledge of Federal
Communication Commission rules and regulations governing electronic
transmission and receiving equipment; good
knowledge of the occupational
hazards and safety precautions which
must be taken when working the high voltage equipment; skill in the
use of electronic repair tools
and testing equipment; ability to detect the causes of breakdowns in electrical
and electronic equipment and to make the proper corrective repairs; ability to
read electrical wiring diagrams and to follow oral and written instructions;
ability to maintain accurate records and to
prepare routine work reports; ability to lift and transport heavy
audiovisual components; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Three (3)
years of experience in the servicing and repairing of electrical and electronic
equipment.
NOTE: Vocational education related to the servicing
and repairing of electrical and electronic equipment will be substituted for experience on a
year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.
PROMOTIONAL
One (1) year permanent competitive status as an Audio
Visual Aide.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment and during employment in this
title employees may, dependent upon the needs and size of the school district
or municipal agency, be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor
vehicle in New York State.
