DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs work of a technical nature involving the servicing, maintenance and operation of a wide variety of theater-related audio, lighting and stage components, including musical instruments, speaker systems, lighting instruments and controls, projectors, intercom systems, stage rigging, stage fabrics and flooring, etc.  The incumbent will be assigned duties that can be readily learned on the job.  Supervision is received from a technical supervisor on-the-job and through periodic conferences and inspection of completed work.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Sets up, tests and adjusts musical instruments, speakers, stage monitors, microphones, cd players, film and slide projectors, and other related theatrical audiovisual equipment for concerts, dance recitals, or theatrical performances;

            Hangs, focuses, and affixes gels to lighting instruments;

            Operates audio and/or lighting equipment;

            Acts as a stage hand during performances;

            Inspects, cleans, oils and replaces worn equipment parts as part of a regular preventative maintenance program;

             Assists in performing minor preventive maintenance work for sound equipment, lighting instruments, dressing rooms, etc;

            Maintains a record of all maintenance and repair work, and submits periodic reports to a technical supervisor;

            May assist in the instruction of new personnel regarding the operation of various types of theatrical audiovisual equipment;

            May be required to attend training sessions and seminars on new equipment or equipment usage and repair.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Some knowledge of stagecraft, including the maintenance and operation of theatrical audiovisual equipment; some knowledge of Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations governing electronic transmission and receiving equipment; ability to learn the operation of theatrical audiovisual and electrical equipment; ability to learn the applicable safety rules for handling electrical and theatrical rigging equipment; ability to lift and transport heavy theatrical audio-visual components; ability to keep simple records and prepare periodic reports; ability to follow oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Participation in theatrical or studio production either as a stagehand or in the operation and maintenance of audiovisual or electrical equipment.

             

NOTE:  Relevant education will be substituted for experience.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Depending upon assignment, at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
