DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in
this class performs highly skilled technical work involving all phases of stagecraft,
including the repair, maintenance, design, modification and operation of audio-visual,
electronic, or electrical theatrical equipment. This position differs from that
of Theater Production Technician in that the incumbent in this class is
responsible for the use and repair of more complex equipment, including
on-stage monitors and front-of- house PA audio consoles, electronic lighting
control consoles, and all related equipment necessary for live stage production
work. Direct supervision may be
exercised over a small number of technical personnel. The work is performed under
the general supervision of the Theater Production Manager and administrative
personnel and is reviewed through conferences and evaluation of work performed.

TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Acts as a technical advisor or
assistant in stage operations;
Operates on-stage and front-of-house audio monitor consoles and/or lighting
consoles, videotape recorders, voice tape recorders, television cameras, film
projectors, and other related electronic, audio-visual and photographic
equipment;
Develops and carries out a maintenance and repair program for all
theatrical audiovisual equipment, including audio and video mixers, amplifiers,
receivers, monitors, generators, projectors, cameras, control panels, patch
systems and test equipment;
Maintains operating and maintenance records of all assigned equipment;
Conducts inventories and maintains inventory records on all assigned
equipment;
Advises higher management on equipment requirements for productions;
Instructs personnel in the proper operation of the various types of
electronic and audio-visual equipment provided to them;
May be required to attend training
sessions and seminars on equipment or equipment repair and usage.
FULLPERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of all aspects of stagecraft, including
the methods used in repairing, maintaining, testing and operating electronic
and electro-mechanical theatrical audiovisual equipment; good knowledge of the
techniques used in the design and construction of electronic and
electro-mechanical audiovisual equipment; good knowledge of the occupational
hazards and safety precautions necessary while using high voltage equipment; good
knowledge of Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations governing
electronic transmission and receiving equipment; ability to detect the causes
of breakdowns in audiovisual, electrical, and electronic equipment and to
repair broken equipment; ability to maintain accurate records and to prepare
work reports; ability to supervise the work of technical personnel in a manner
conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate
with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

(a) Two
(2) years of participation in theatrical or studio production either as a stagehand
or in the operation and maintenance of audiovisual or electrical equipment.
(b) Two (2) seasons working as a
Theater Production Technician.
NOTE: Relevant education will be substituted for
experience on a year-for-year basis.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENT
Depending upon
assignment, at the time of appointment and during
employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a
motor vehicle in New York State.
