DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class oversees the operation of a municipal theater.  The incumbent supervises and participates in all phases of stage performances, including use of necessary equipment.  The incumbent translates program requirements into staged productions including the determination of material, equipment and personnel. Supervision is exercised over all theater staff.  The incumbent works under the direction of an administrative supervisor.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Supervises the operation of a municipal theater;

            Supervises, trains, schedules, assigns and reviews the work of Theatre Production Specialists and Technicians;

            Instructs personnel in the proper operation of the various types of theatrical electronic, audio-visual, and mechanical equipment;

            Ensures that theater equipment is properly maintained, serviced, and repaired;  

            Maintains operating and maintenance records of all equipment;

            Conducts inventories and maintains inventory records on all equipment;

            Advises administrators on equipment requirements for various productions and projects;

            Compiles production riders and determines material, equipment and personnel needed;

            May make photographic records of special events and instructional materials for inclusion in reports and publications for internal and external dissemination;

            Maintains the theater during the off-season;

            Attends audio-visual engineering and production technical conferences.    

           

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of all aspects of stage craft; thorough knowledge of the techniques used in the design and construction of electronic and electro-mechanical audiovisual equipment; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary while using high voltage equipment; thorough knowledge of Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations governing electronic transmission and receiving equipment; ability to use innovative and effective methods relating to theatrical production; ability to interpret oral and written technical instructions; ability to prepare comprehensive and accurate reports; ability to supervise personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            EITHER:

            (a) Four (4) years of participation in theatrical or studio production or management either as a stage hand or in the operation and maintenance of audiovisual or electrical equipment; or,

            (b) Two (2) seasons working as a Theater Production Specialist.

 

            NOTE:  Relevant education will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

 

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Depending upon assignment, at the time of appointment and during employment in this title employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
