DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this
class performs skilled work in processing and printing color and black and
white film and digital images required
for criminal investigation and as evidence in court. The incumbent must use standard,
semi-automatic, and digital image equipment and must maintain strict quality
control of the finished product. Work is
performed under the general supervision of Suffolk County Police Department
officials. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Performs skilled photographic work as
required;
Develops color and black and white
film and makes prints and enlargements;
Performs printing objectives by using
digital cameras and scanners;
Uses Adobe Photoshop to produce
commercial quality enlargements and designs;
Photographs evidence and scenes for
public relations and court-related assignments;
Mixes and replenishes photographic
chemical solutions and monitors temperature controls;
Tests for quality control and prepares
graphs of the results;
Maintains inventory of film, paper and
other photographic supplies;
Performs preventive maintenance on all
photographic equipment.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of
the methods used in developing, printing and enlarging color and black and
white film; good knowledge of semi-automatic film and print-processing
equipment; good knowledge of the methods used in processing, printing and
enlarging digital images; good knowledge of digital equipment; good knowledge of Adobe Photoshop; good knowledge of methods of color correction and quality control
of photographic chemistry; skill in developing, printing and enlarging color
and black and white negatives and prints; skill in the care and preventive
maintenance of photographic equipment; ability to understand and follow oral
and written instructions; ability to maintain accurate records; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
(a)
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school
equivalency diploma, and two (2) years of experience as a photographer and/or
photographic laboratory technician; or,
(b)
Four (4) years of experience as a photographer and/or photographic laboratory
technician; or,
(c) An equivalent combination of
education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
NOTE: Relevant additional education in photography
will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
PROMOTIONAL
One (1) year of permanent competitive status
as a Photographic Technician.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENT
At the time of
appointment, and during employment in this title, employees may be required to
possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
