DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under
general direction, an employee in this class is responsible for taking
photographs of government officials and their staffs in the performance of
their duties at public functions. Work
includes providing an official photographic record of special events which will
be included in reports and documents for public dissemination. The incumbent receives general instructions
regarding the type and site of assignment, but is expected to use professional
judgment and technical skill in executing the assignments. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Photographs
public officials and their staffs at public functions and events;
Photographs, develops and
enlarges prints of official functions, historic occasions and public
ceremonies;
Arranges subjects
suitable in various settings and against varied backgrounds;
Uses a variety of
equipment including different types of cameras, lenses and filters in order to
achieve the best possible photographic results;
Maintains files of
photographs by subject and date;
Provides photographic
record of important events for the government jurisdiction;
Reproduces and
disseminates prints to be included in reports, documents and newspapers.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of photography; good
knowledge of the uses of various types of photographic equipment, such as
lenses, filters, types of film and cameras; good knowledge of the chemical and
mechanical processes by which pictures are developed, enlarged and printed; ability
to establish and maintain good working relations with public figures and the
general public; ability to put people at ease and allow them to feel
comfortable while photographs are being taken; ability to use imagination,
originality and artistic ability in placing subjects and objects in pleasant
settings, with good lighting and composition; physical condition commensurate
with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a New York State or
Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in
photography, and two (2) years of experience as a photographer on either a
salaried or commissioned basis; or,
b) Graduation from a standard senior high
school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years
of experience as a photographer on either a salaried or commissioned basis; or,
c) An equivalent combination of education and
experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
