DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is responsible for planning and supervising
the work of a number of employees performing color, black and white and digital
image photographic processing in the
Police Department photographic plant. The work entails technical supervision of
such a plant and requires the incumbent to possess a thorough knowledge of
photographic processing. Work is
performed under the general supervision of an administrative supervisor and is
reviewed through periodic discussions and observation of work produced. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises civilian
personnel performing both color and black and white photographic tasks;
Supervises civilian
personnel performing digital image photographic tasks;
Uses Adobe Photoshop to
produce commercial quality enlargements and designs;
Supervises the
maintenance of photographic equipment to ensure proper performance;
Supervises inventory of
photographic supplies;
Makes mechanical repairs
on equipment;
Mixes chemicals used in
the photographic process;
Performs quality control
functions such as reading photographic test strips to ensure that color
chemistry meets manufacturers' specifications;
Participates, at times,
in the operation of processing equipment such as an EP2 processor, a C41
processor or a Noritsu OSS-3212 digital imaging processor;
May instruct PD personnel
in digital photography;
Makes recommendations
about selection and ordering of equipment;
Operates an automatic
color printer.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of processing equipment such as C41 and EP2 color
processors and a Noritsu OSS-3212
digital imaging processor; thorough knowledge of Adobe Photoshop; thorough
knowledge of large tank black and white processing; good knowledge of the
chemicals used in color and black and white photographic processing; good
knowledge of chemical process management; some knowledge of the function of a
densitometer, used in reading test strips; ability to make simple mechanical
repairs on photographic equipment; ability to operate a printer, enlarger and
digital scanner; ability to distinguish all different types of film; ability to
understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to assign and
supervise the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and
high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a
standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma,
and five (5) years experience in photographic plant management (color, black
and white and digital image
processing), two (2) years of which must have been in the supervision of
such a facility.
NOTE:
Relevant additional education in photographic processing will be
substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2)
years. There is no substitution for supervisory experience.
