DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs medical and other scientific photographic work and specialized photographic work of accidents and crimes, and the victims thereof.  The employee is respon­sible for extensive photographing of death cases coming under the jurisdiction of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office.  Injuries and pathological conditions are photographed at the Medical Examiner's labora­tories and the morgue.  The work also involves fingerprinting and performing x-rays of cadavers, and may involve the use of motion picture photography.  The employee receives general instructions on carrying out assignments, but the techniques and type of equipment used to accomplish the work are the employee’s responsibility.  The nature of the work requires the performance of photography in often-unpleasant conditions, with possible exposure to materials contaminated with communicable diseases and cadavers in various states of decomposition.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Photographs, processes, and enlarges prints of cadavers, autopsy work, injuries, pathological findings, anatomical structures, and evidence of crime;

          Prepares and maintains files, diagrams, flyers, and other visual aids for lectures, demonstrations, or educational purposes;

          Fingerprints and assists in the identification of cadavers;

          Performs x-rays of cadavers;

          Maintains archives of files, photographs, and x-rays produced in connection with each assignment;

          Requisitions supplies and equipment needed for photographic work and recommends additional and replacement equipment;

          Maintains and performs simple repairs of photographic equipment;

          Provides photographic record of noteworthy events concerning the Medical Examiner's Office;

          Prepares identification cards for members of the Department.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the principals, practices, techniques, and equipment utilized in still and motion picture photography; working knowledge of human anatomy and biology; ability to photograph cadavers, evidence, autopsy procedures, and tissues with great clarity and detail;  working knowledge of computer systems and programs related to photography;  skill in the operation of photographic equipment; ability to process and enlarge photographs; ability to work under the often unpleasant conditions for an extended period of time, with possible exposure to materials contaminated with communicable diseases, in photographing cadavers in various states of decomposition; ability to learn highly specialized scientific photography; ability to perform simple repairs of photographic equipment;  ability to learn x-ray and fingerprinting processes; ability to design and prepare photographic presentations; ability to solve problems; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school and six (6) years of varied experience* as a photographer, including computerized processing and editing work, on either a salaried or commissioned basis.

 

NOTES:  * Varied experience shall be interpreted as experience involving photography of multiple different subject matters, utilizing multiple different photographic techniques and equipment, beyond that required for routine taking and processing of photographs, that sufficiently demonstrates the ability to learn and perform specialized scientific photography.  

 

Additional education in Photography from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.

 

Additional education in Medical Photography from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
