DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs supervisory and specialized forensic and medical photography.  The incumbent supervises and participates in the work of Medical Photographers who are responsible for photographing, developing and enlarging prints of death scenes, corpses, autopsy work, injuries, pathological findings and crime evidence.  The employee assigns and reviews the work of the photography staff, maintains proper work flow in the section, coordinates routine as well as on-call coverage and develops methods for specialized forensic and medical photography.  The work includes giving expert testimony if called upon by the District Attorney.  Supervision is received from an administrative supervisor through conferences and a review of reports issued.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Supervises and performs routine photographic duties including ID photographs, mortuary and gross specimen photography and other photographic documentation;

            Supervises and performs radiographs and insures that the X-ray suite is within county, state and federal guidelines;

            Performs specialized ultraviolet and infra-red photography and photomicroscopy;

            Requisitions and maintains extensive and diverse photographic material for Medical Examiner's Office; makes recommendations for the purchase of specialized photographic equipment;

            Testifies as an expert witness when called upon by the District Attorney.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of photographic processes in:  black and white developing and printing, color developing and printing, infrared, ultraviolet, and photomicroscopy and duplication of photographic and radiographic material; thorough knowledge of video taping techniques; thorough knowledge of x-ray techniques and local, state and federal radiographic codes; ability to evaluate and/or develop photographic procedures and techniques; ability to work under unpleasant conditions for long periods of time, possibly with infectious diseases and/or decomposed bodies; ability to prepare professional courtroom exhibits as needed; ability to plan, organized and supervise work of the medical photographers in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to maintain effective working relationships with others; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and eight (8) years experience as a photographer, including color process work, on either a salaried or commissioned basis; two (2) years of the experience must have been in a supervisory position.                                                                                                 

 

NOTE:  Additional education in photography beyond high school may be substituted for the non-supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis.

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Medical Photographer.
