DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, the Graphic Arts Aide assists in the design, preparation, and organization of a variety of graphic arts materials.  The work is performed by following instructions from a skilled artisan.  More independent judgement is utilized as experience and skill is acquired.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists with art layout by doing simple pasteups, ruling work, and using the strip printer and varigraph;

          Mounts, stores, and maintains original art and printing masters;

          Identifies and catalogues photographs as to subject, location, date, and photographer;

          Assists in setting up, dismantling, and storing of displays and display materials;

          Obtains photocopies of layouts as inhouse proofs for approval of the supervisor;

          Maintains inventory and general maintenance of art supplies;

          Selects and classifies clip art for future art application;

          Prepares photographic chemicals for strip printing apparatus;

          Maintains the order of type fonts;

          Delivers and picks up proofs;

          Performs any other functions as assigned by the supervisor for the smooth working of the department.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Some knowledge of the principles of design and display; some knowledge of the principles, procedures, and methods of layout; working knowledge of tools, equipment, and supplies used in graphic arts preparation; skill and manual dexterity in learning to use graphic arts tools, equipment, and supplies; ability to classify and catalogue original art, photographs, clip art, etc.; ability to properly store and maintain original art, printing masters, and all art supplies; ability to prepare chemicals for use with the strip printing apparatus; ability to perform related activities such as maintaining inventory, organizing materials, making deliveries of proofs and photocopies; ability to follow written and oral instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          (a) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high chool equivalency diploma recognized by the New York State Department of Education; or,

 

          (b) Four years of experience in graphic arts; or,

 

          (c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
