DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs specialized work dealing with the design and development of graphic materials for jurisdic­tions within Suffolk County.  The employee prepares a variety of charts, graphs, illustrations, transparencies  and other graphics for use in various publications and websites or as visual aids.  The employee works with a variety of photographic, transfer-type, paste­up and other graphic methods and techniques in addition to ordering, routing and cataloging all graphic materials used by the jurisdiction.  Supervi­sion may be exercised over a part-time staff. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level administra­tor and is reviewed by through consultation and periodic review of art work completed.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Designs and develops graphics for brochures, catalogs, pam­phlets, websites and visual aids using original artwork, photographs, transfer lettering, paste-up methods and ink rulings;

            Designs and develops sets of transparencies used by administrators and/or teachers;

            Orders, catalogs and routes filmstrips and records for the jurisdiction;

            Maintains inventory of graphic materials and processes all requests for information from companies about various visual aids materials;

            Reproduces transparencies and paper prints and makes original ditto masters of materials from books and magazines for the jurisdiction.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques of commercial and graphic art; good knowledge of office practices and procedures, office equipment and the principles of supervision; ability to design and develop transparencies; ability to utilize basic skills in all forms of art work and graphic design; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            Either:

            (a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State an Associate's Degree in Art; or,

           

            (b) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and (2) years of experience in graphic arts work; or,

           

            (c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
