DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class provides routine non-professional personal care and general assistance to patients, thus enabling them to remain in their home surroundings.  The incumbent is responsible for making scheduled visits to a number of homes, serving each patient according to the nature and extent of that individual's illness or disability.  The work is performed under the supervision of an administrative or professional supervisor and is reviewed through conferences and written reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists the patient with bathing and personal grooming;

            Performs light housekeeping chores;

            Assists the patient with non-professional rehabilitative activities such as walking or exercising affected parts of the body;

            Performs light shopping errands to provide for the patient's needs.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Knowledge of non-professional principles of patient care; knowledge of housekeeping procedures and equipment; ability to deal effectively with patients and their families in a tactful and courteous manner; ability to follow oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

There are no minimum education or experience requirements for this position.

           

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees are required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
