DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE
CLASS
Under immediate supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse or a Licensed Practical Nurse, an employee in this class performs routine assignments in patient care. Employees are usually trained on the job for their basic activities; more responsible work is assigned upon completion of training and demonstration of competencies. Direct contact with patients is subject to supervision by professional or technical supervisors but routine custodial tasks are performed with considerably less supervision. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists
patients with dressing, undressing, changing, bathing and other personal care
needs; gives back rubs, shaves patients;
Assists
in patient positioning and routine restorative exercises as supervised by
professional staff;
Assists
in serving meals and feeding special care patients; collects trays;
Assists
in maintaining a clean and orderly environment for the patients within the
room, work areas, recreational areas, etc.;
Assists
in recording temperatures, pulse, and respiration rate;
Assists
in making daily reports;
Assists
in transfer of patients to or from the facility.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES,
SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Knowledge
of standard techniques involved in providing personal services for patients,
and caring for equipment and supplies at a hospital or institution; ability to
learn the nonprofessional principles of patient care, especially with respect
to feeding, bathing, dressing, and activities of daily living; ability to learn
and recognize symptoms indicating need for emergency treatment or care; ability
to follow oral and written directions in detail; ability to maintain a
sympathetic attitude toward patients; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
There are no minimum educational
or experience requirements for this position.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment,
employee must be listed in the New York State RHCF Nurse Aide Registry. This
certification must be continued throughout the term of employment.
