DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class
performs nursing duties in accordance with required training and the rules,
regulations and established practices of the licensing agency and the
Department of Health Services. The
incumbent receives general assignments from a Registered Nurse and is expected
to carry them out without detailed instructions. The work includes patient care and special
feeding, administering medications, routine treatments and performing routine
diagnostic and laboratory tests. Supervision
may be exercised over Nurses Aides and/or other subordinate personnel. The work is reviewed through observation and
conferences. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Provides skilled patient care to residents of the Suffolk
County Nursing Home or outpatients at various clinics;
Administers medication and nursing
treatment to patients as prescribed by a physician and monitors patients'
reactions to same;
Takes and records vital signs,
assesses and supervises nutritional intake, and supervises intake and output
when indicated;
Assigns, schedules, supervises and
reviews the work of Nurses Aides and/or other subordinate personnel;
Makes periodic rounds of units and
attends required meetings, conferences and seminars;
Maintains patients' charts and
writes reports on activities;
In health clinics, takes medical
histories, assists physicians and/or registered nurses in examinations and
treatments, and performs electrocardiograms and routine laboratory procedures;
May act as Charge Nurse of a
sub-unit in the Suffolk County Nursing Home.
May order, inventory and store supplies;
May make field visits to selected
outpatients and/or their families.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of
practical nursing; thorough knowledge of the standard equipment and materials
used in patient care; skill in carrying out routine therapeutic measures;
ability to supervise in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale;
ability to perform routine laboratory and diagnostic tests accurately; ability
to follow oral and written instructions of a technical nature; ability to
recognize symptoms indicating a need for emergency treatment; ability to deal
with patients sympathetically and tactfully while administering treatment; ability
to keep accurate records and to express oneself clearly and concisely, both
orally and in writing; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Either:
a) Possession of a license issued by the State of New York
to practice as a practical nurse; or
b) Possession of a limited permit
issued by New York State to practice as a practical nurse.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENT
Candidates must
possess or, for those with limited permits, obtain within one year a current
registration issued by the State of New York to practice as a practical nurse,
and must maintain a valid registration throughout employment in this title.
