DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class supervises and coordinates the functions of all school health offices within the school district's boundaries.  The employee is responsible for the development of nursing staff and for the evaluation of the health office program and personnel.  Administrative supervision is exercised over professional and para-professional staff.  The work requires the exercise of professional judgement and initiative and is reviewed by an administrative supervisor by observation, conferences and submission of written reports.  Does related work as required.

           

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Orients and assigns nurses and health office personnel;

            Supervises the maintenance of all health records and reports;

            May develop studies and surveys to assess program needs;

            Requisitions and distributes health office supplies and equipment;

            Establishes and maintains liaison with community groups;

            Assesses program needs and prepares budgets;

            Evaluates performance of nursing personnel;

            Supervises and participates in the preparation of all federal and state mandated forms.

 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of professional nursing; good knowledge of current developments and sources of information in the field of nursing; skill in the application of professional nursing techniques and methods; ability to plan, assign, supervise and evaluate the work of the professional nursing staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to deal with students appropriately while carrying out prescribed treatment; ability to instruct assigned personnel and others in basic nursing care; ability to maintain complete and accurate records and to prepare reports from observations; ability to safely draw intravenous blood; good judgement; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Four (4) years of experience as a Registered Nurse, one (1) of which must have been in a position involving supervisory responsibilities.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Candidates must possess a Registered Nurse License issued by the State of New York.  Current registration must be maintained throughout the term of employment.
