DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class supervises the operation of an assigned shift at the Suffolk County Nursing Home. The incumbent ensures efficiency and the quality of nursing services by supervising the professional and non-professional staff, conferring with staff nurses concerning doctors' orders, and providing direct supervision for the most difficult cases.  Duties require the exercise of considerable independent judgment and initiative in solving problems on the shift within the guidelines of departmental policy.  Work is reviewed by the Nursing Care Director or Assistant Nursing Care Director through conferences, reports and periodic ward rounds.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assigns, schedules and supervises the work of professional and non-professional nursing staff;

            Plans vacation schedules, maintains personnel records and periodically evaluates licenses personnel;

            Supervises treatment of patients, most of whom are aged and infirm; assigns nurses to assist physicians when appropriate;

            Confers daily with other shift supervisors and nursing administration as needed;

            Assists in conducting the in-service training program;

            Attends professional conferences to learn and promote the latest professional nursing methods.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of modern professional nursing; good knowledge of current developments and sources of information in the field of nursing; skill in the application of professional nursing techniques and methods; ability to plan, assign, supervise and evaluate the work of the nursing staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to deal with patients tactfully and sympathetically while carrying out prescribed treatment; ability to instruct personnel and others in basic nursing care; ability to safely draw intravenous blood; ability to maintain complete and accurate records and to prepare reports from observations; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position,

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Four (4) years of experience as a Registered Nurse, at least two (2) years of which must have been in an inpatient facility.

           

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a Registered Nurse's license issued by New York State; appointees must maintain a current registration throughout their employment in this title.
