DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class plans, supervises and conducts a comprehensive training program for the nursing personnel of the Suffolk County Nursing Home.  The employee maintains a professional training program for all levels of nursing personnel at the Nursing Home.  The incumbent is responsible for assisting in the planning of pre-service and in-service educational programs pertaining to nursing care.  This work includes the estab­lishment, supervision, and evaluation of all activities of these programs.  Work is supervised by the Director of Nursing Care and is reviewed through periodic reports, frequent consultations and observations.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

               Assesses the educational and performance needs of employees;

               Maintains the staffs' skills in the application of nursing techniques and practices;

               Plans new educational programs and revises old programs for the nursing personnel and clinical units; establishes criteria for in-service educational programs;

               Coordinates, establishes and supervises the activities for all pre-service and in-service educational matters pertaining to all levels of nursing personnel at the Suffolk County Nursing Home which relate to patient care and the environment in accordance with federal and state code rules and regulations;

               Participates in the evaluation of effectiveness of the training programs as to planning, content, methods, records, reports and facilities used;

               Supervises and participates in teaching courses of the training program;

               Gathers and maintains instruction and reference material and acts as a source of information for other departments;

               Maintains in-service records for personnel; prepares reports of in-service activities;

               Plans for orientation of all new nursing personnel and evaluates their performance;

               Monitors patient total care plans and instructs staff in their use;

               Serves as a member of selected committees.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of training programs, especially as they pertain to the nursing personnel of nursing homes; good knowledge of current developments, literature and sources of information in nursing and training techniques; good knowledge of federal and state rules and regulations as they apply to nursing services; good knowledge of modern principles, practices and techniques of nursing administration; skill in the application of nursing techniques and practices; ability to plan and review training programs and to conduct them in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to sympathetically understand the physical, emotional and religious needs of the aged, chronically ill and disabled; ability to prepare and maintain accurate records; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

               OPEN COMPETITIVE

               Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and two (2) years of experience in an administrative or teaching position.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment, the candidate must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York.  This license must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
