FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under direction of the administrator of the Skilled
Nursing Facility and in coordination with the medical director, an employee in
this class is responsible for the functioning of nursing services and
coordinating of patient services. The incumbent assists in development,
interpretation and implementation of administrative policies, and initiates and
interprets new procedures and practices to the nursing staff and other patient
care support staff. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Develops and maintains methods for
coordination of nursing services with other patient services as defined by
federal, state and local rules and regulations;
Develops and maintains nursing
service objectives and standards of nursing practice and nursing policy and
procedure manuals;
Maintains written job descriptions
for each level of nursing personnel;
Oversees nursing staff development;
Reviews the work of professional and
nonprofessional nursing employees engaged in the care and treatment of the
patients;
Interviews, recommends employment
and termination of personnel, arranges work and vacation schedules for the
nursing staff;
Approves time records and submits
periodic reports on personnel to administrative office;
Serves on committees and functions
as liaison with other directors of nursing of skilled nursing facilities;
participates with outside agencies and groups as required;
Assists in formulation of reporting
mechanism of support services in all areas which affect direct or indirect
patient care.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of principles, practices and
techniques of general administrative and supervisory practices; thorough
knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing; thorough knowledge of
current developments, literature and sources of information in the field of
administration and nursing, particularly as it applies to a skilled nursing
facility; ability to plan, direct, evaluate and supervise work of
professional and non-professional
personnel in a manner conducive to appropriate standards; ability to understand
the physical, emotional and psychological needs of the aged,
chronically ill and disabled; ability to maintain records of administrative and
nursing services and to make comprehensive reports; ability to express oneself
clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Either:
a)
Graduation from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Master's Degree in Nursing or related
health administration and four (4) years of experience in a supervisory or
administrative nursing position in a nursing home;
b)
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized
accreditation or registration by NY State
with a Bachelor’s Degree
in Nursing and six (6) years of experience in a supervisory or administrative nursing
position in a nursing home; or
c)
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized
accreditation or registration by NY State
with an Associate’s
Degree in Nursing and eight (8) years of experience in a supervisory or
administrative nursing position in a nursing home.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment, the candidate must be
licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York. This license must be maintained throughout
employment in this title.
