FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under the direct supervision of a physician licensed to practice medicine in New York State, an employee in this class assists in the delivery of non-specialized health care. The incumbent is expected to free the physician's time for the less routine medical cases, by providing basic medical services which do not require the physician's personal attention. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists a physician in conducting
pre-employment physicals to assess the candidate's ability to perform the
duties of a position;
Obtains background and clinical data
on patients for the physician;
Orders laboratory tests when needed
and analyzes the results of such tests;
Examines inmates reporting for sick
call at the County jail;
Performs venipunctures
and takes blood samples;
Maintains detailed records and
prepares reports on medical care received by patients;
Assists the physician in suturing,
applying and removing casts, changing dressings and other clinic procedures.

PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of the basic principles, practices and techniques of medical and
clinical sciences; skill in the use of standard diagnostic equipment; ability
to perform basic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including medical
history and physical examinations; ability to respond quickly and effectively
in emergency situations; ability to safely draw intravenous blood; ability to
follow spoken and written instructions; ability to interpret and record test
results accurately; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both
orally and in writing; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Registration as a Physician's
Assistant with the New York State Department of Education; and,
Either:
a) Graduation from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a
Bachelor's Degree in a Physician Assistant program; or,
b) One (1) year of experience as a
Physician's Assistant; or,
c) Two (2) years of experience as a
Registered Nurse or Medical Corps-person assigned to direct patient care.
NOTE: Possession of a National Board of Medical
Examiner's Certificate may be substituted for the above experience.
NECESSARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
New
York State registration as a Physician's Assistant must be maintained
throughout employment in this position.
Depending
upon assignment, candidates may be required to be credentialed by the Suffolk
County Department of Health Services’ Compliance Bureau Credentialing
Committee, and maintain this credential throughout employment in the
assignment.
