DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under the general supervision of a physician licensed to practice medicine in New York State, an employee in this class supervises a health care program. The incumbent diagnoses and treats routine medical problems, freeing the time of the physician for less routine medical cases. The work differs from that of a Physician's Assistant I by virtue of its expanded scope, level of responsibility and supervisory responsibilities. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Obtains background and clinical data on clients for the
physician;
Performs various hematological
examinations such as hemoglobin determinations and blood counts;
Performs chemical examinations of
blood for sugar, nonprotein nitrogen and other contents;
Performs or assists the physician in a
variety of diagnostic procedures such as gastric analysis, venous or arterial
punctures, bone marrow examinations, lumbar puncture and pulmonary function
studies;
Works with technicians in laboratory
tests, X-ray, and other diagnostic and therapeutic procedures;
Writes prescriptions as directed for
non-controlled substances for patients on the covering physician's pad, as long
as it bears the physician's name and address;
Assists the physician in suturing,
cast application and removal, dressing changes and other clinic procedures;
Monitors patient's progress, either
postoperative or while under prolonged treatment;
Responds to emergencies in the absence
of a physician;
Maintains records and prepares reports
regarding the medical care received by clients;
Coordinates, plans and supervises the
work of Physician's Assistants I, the nursing staff, health aides and other
medical unit personnel.

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and
techniques of basic medical and clinical sciences; good knowledge of the
principles, practices and techniques of the use of laboratory equipment; good
knowledge of effective supervisory techniques; skill in the use of medical
testing equipment; ability to perform assigned tasks according to prescribed
order and to interpret and record results accurately; ability to perform
specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including medical history
and physical examinations; ability to safely draw intravenous blood; ability to
respond quickly in emergency situations; ability to express oneself clearly and
concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to supervise support staff in a
manner conducive to full performance and high morale; good judgment; tact;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Registration as a Physician's
Assistant with the New York State Department of Education; and,
a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor of Science Degree in a Physician Assistant program and three (3) years of experience as a Physician's Assistant; or,
b) Four (4) years of experience as a
Physician's Assistant; or,
c) Five (5) years of experience as a
registered nurse or medical corpsman assigned to direct patient care.
NOTE: Possession of a
National Board of Medical Examiners' Certificate may be substituted for one (1)
year of experience as a Physician's Assistant or for two (2) years of
experience as a registered nurse or medical corpsman assigned to direct patient
care.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a
Physician's Assistant I.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENT
New York State registration as a Physician's Assistant
must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
Depending
upon assignment, candidates may be required to be credentialed by the Suffolk
County Department of Health Services’ Compliance Bureau Credentialing
Committee, and maintain this credential throughout employment in the
assignment.
