DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under
supervision, the employee inspects a variety of food establishments, sewage and
water facilities, swimming areas, and labor camps to determine adequacy of sanitary
facilities and to insure compliance with public health laws and the sanitary
code. Work also involves responsibility
for gathering information for use of public health engineers and Senior Public
Health Sanitations in determining the need for sanitary improvements. Inspections require only a sub-professional
knowledge of environmental sanitation matters and the employee is required to
prepare reports on inspections and routine correspondence. Work is performed under the supervision of a
Senior Environmental Health Technician who reviews reports and provides
advisory assistance.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Inspects restaurants and public eating
places for arrangement of food handling, food service, dishwashing and
disinfection of dishes and utensils;
Inspects the handling, display and
storage of meat and food in retail establishments;
Inspects the sanitary conditions of
camps, hotels, and boarding house;
Inspects newly installed private and
public sewage and water systems for adherence to laws and sanitary code
regulations, and to determine compliance with approved plans;
Inspects semi-public or individual
water supplies and sewage disposal devices, toilets, garbage disposal, public
health nuisance complaints and general sanitation;
Inspects milk pasteurization plants for
cleanliness and general sanitation;
Keeps records and prepares reports on
inspections made;
Assists in the preparation of evidence
for court cases involving sanitary code violations; may testify in court.
FULL
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge
of the principles and practices of environmental sanitation and inspection;
good knowledge of public health laws and sanitary codes governing environmental
sanitation; ability to make inspections and evaluate sanitary conditions;
ability to enforce codes and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially;
ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction; ability to keep
records and to prepare and submit reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a New York State or
Regionally accredited college or technical institute with an associate degree
in applied science or completion of two year of college, including twelve
credit hours of mathematics and natural science, plus one year of satisfactory
experience as an Environmental Health Technician Trainee, during which time the
applicant satisfactorily completed an in-service environmental health training
program approved by the State Department of Health; or,
An Associate degree in applied science
in a course specifically approved by the Public Health Council.
NECESARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Eligibility for
a certificate as an Environmental Health Technician issued by the State of New
York at the time of application for appointment. Possession of the certificate at the time of permanent
appointment.
