DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class is involved in supervising the activities of Public Health Sanitarians, and/or other environmental health and public health personnel, or performing a specialized assignment in a section of the Division of Environmental Quality or Public Health of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. Work is performed under the supervision of an Associate Public Health Sanitarian or a Public Health Engineer in charge of the section or unit. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Supervises technical personnel and
participates in field inspections of one or more of the areas of water supply,
sewage disposal, industrial waste treatment, storage and handling of hazardous
materials, air pollution, solid waste, housing and general sanitation, food
control or other environmental health or public health programs;
Supervises the collection of samples
for bacteriological and chemical analysis by the department or contract
laboratories;
Supervises the investigation of
foodborne outbreaks and other food emergencies;
Conducts Food Manager's
Certification courses for food industry personnel;
Conducts preliminary enforcement
activities, including preparing orders on consent and participating in
compliance conferences and informal hearings, to assure compliance with the
sanitary codes;
Answers inquires on and explains
compliance requirements of
Coordinates in-service training
programs for Public Health Sanitarians.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the principles, laws, regulations, practices and techniques of
environmental health and public health; good knowledge of effective supervisory
methods; ability to formulate work programs; ability to supervise a
professional, technical and clerical staff in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with owners and managers of business and industrial
establishments, property owners, public officials, civic groups and the general
public; ability to prepare accurate and comprehensive reports of investigations
and inspections; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or
registration by NY State with a Bachelor's
Degree including, or supplemented by, a minimum of thirty (30) credit hours in
the natural sciences, of which not more than twelve (12) credit hours are in
the applied sciences, and two (2) years of experience as a public health
sanitarian.
PROMOTIONAL
Two
(2) years of permanent competitive status as a Public Health Sanitarian.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment, and during
employment in this title, employees will be required to possess a valid license
to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
