BACTERIOLOGIST II 2212
Under general supervision, an employee in this class
performs and supervises complex testing and analyses of various substances to
determine the extent of bacterial contamination in potable water, lakes, marine
waters, beaches, industrial waste and sewage samples. The work involves the use and maintenance of
sophisticated laboratory equipment. The
incumbent trains laboratory technicians in preparing media, staining, plating
and performing routine tests, and supervises the work performed for adherence
to standard procedures. This class
differs from Bacteriologist in that it involves more complex tests and analyses
and higher levels of supervisory and administrative responsibility. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Supervises laboratory technicians employees in the
performance of tests and analyses;
Develops and implements quality
control standards and oversees adherence to these standards;
Assigns work to staff and
establishes priority of samples to be tested to increase efficiency and
establish proper workflow;
Supervises planting of various
bacteriological water samples and personally handles samples of unusual nature
or known problem cases;
Transfers and enumerates
bacteriological tube cultures and subjects them to additional testing as
required;
Performs microscopic identification
and enumeration of bacteriological plate cultures and subjects them to
additional testing as required;
Reviews laboratory report sheets,
records final data, enters data in laboratory log and submits final initialed
reports to an administrative supervisor;
Maintains adequate supplies and
equipment;
May assist in planning laboratory
budget;
May be required to testify in court
regarding test results;
Interprets federal, state and local
standards for potable, surface and wastewater effluents.

Thorough knowledge of modern laboratory methods,
procedures and equipment; thorough knowledge of the theories and practices of
bacteriology; thorough knowledge of relevant federal, state and local public
health standards regarding potable water, recreational waters, bathing beaches
and wastewater effluents; thorough knowledge of the quality assurance/quality
control procedures that are required by the New York State Department of Health
- Environmental Laboratory Approved Program (ELAP); ability to plan, schedule
and supervise the work of laboratory technicians in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; ability to program and operate complex electronic
laboratory equipment; ability to do original research work; ability to make
accurate observations and draw correct conclusions; ability to express oneself
clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to maintain good
relationships with co-workers; physical condition commensurate with the demands
of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in Bacteriology, Biochemistry,
Biology, Microbiology, or one of the Natural or Medical Sciences which includes
at least sixteen (16) credit hours in Biology including Microbiology, and two
(2) years of analytical experience as a bacteriologist, biochemist, biologist
or microbiologist.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a
Bacteriologist.
