Under direct supervision, an employee in this class compiles
and maintains routine pharmaceutical records in a pharmacy setting including
storing and dispensing supplies. The
employee performs routine manual and specialized clerical tasks in receiving,
storing, and issuing medical and pharmaceutical supplies. Detailed instructions and close supervision
are received at the beginning of work and on new assignments, but regular
routine assignments may be performed more independently and initiative and
judgment are utilized as experience is gained.
Duties require knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology and the
maintenance of varied stock records.
Assignments are received in the form of medications and supplies to be
stored and dispensed. Work is subject to
close supervision and reviewed by supervisors upon completion both for content
and accuracy. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Assists a pharmacist in dispensing drugs by getting drugs
from stock, counting dosage units of drugs, placing dosage units in appropriate
containers, and affixing prescription labels to containers;
Keys prescription data for the
pharmacist to enter into a computer-generated file and retrieves prescription
data from the file for the pharmacist's review;
Receives, unpacks, and stores
pharmaceutical and medical supplies in pharmacy stock area, and maintains stock
records;
Assists in checking incoming
materials against invoices or purchase orders or in filling requisitions;
Assists in taking inventory and
maintains manual and automated records of goods received and issued;
Cleans pharmacy storeroom area and
keeps stock in order;
Develops efficient storage methods
including the allocation of proper bins or other storage spaces;
Assists in the packaging and bagging
of pharmaceuticals for transfer to other sites.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Working knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology required
for proper classification, maintenance, and custody of pharmacy records;
working knowledge of pharmacy record keeping principles and practices; ability
to calculate pharmaceutical dosages accurately; ability to maintain stock
records; ability to carry out oral and written instructions; sufficient
physical strength and agility to permit the lifting and moving of heavy
objects; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
(a) Graduation from a standard
senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one
(1) year of experience assisting a pharmacist, or other licensed health care
provider legally authorized to prescribe medication, in the dispensing of
prescription medications; or,
(b) Graduation from a standard senior high
school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and successful
completion of a Pharmacy Technician program.
