DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under supervision, an employee in this class performs routine technical work involving the use of X-ray equipment. Work includes the developing and processing of film and the maintenance of X-ray records. Work is performed in accordance with established X-ray techniques and safety measures. Supervision may be exercised over a clerical support staff, and is received from a Senior X-ray Technician through the review of the quality and safety of the work performed. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Sets up and operates stationary, portable or mobile X-ray equipment as well as moving ancillary equipment to clinics and related facilities;

          Prepares and arranges patients for X-ray, fluoroscope, or other radiological examination or treatment;

          May take radiographs for diagnostic purposes;

          May administer X-ray or other radiological therapy to patients under direct supervision of a physician;

          Prepares developing solutions and processes X-ray film;

          Assists with fluoroscopic examinations by preparing solutions and administering them as prescribed, positioning patient and adjusting controls;

          Observes and records patients' condition and reports significant information;

          May supervise clerical duties such as scheduling appointments, cataloging and filing X-ray film and reports;

          Performs minor and routine maintenance of X-ray equipment.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the operation of X-ray equipment; good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of X-ray equipment; good knowledge of developing and processing X-ray film; some knowledge of human anatomy; skill in the operation and care of X-ray photographic apparatus and equipment; ability to keep records; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and completion of an approved two (2) year course in X-ray technology, or the equivalent course of study as determined by the New York State Department of Health.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment, and throughout employment in this title, employees must be registered by the New York State Department of Health to practice as a Radiologic Technologist.
