DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class supervises and participates in difficult technical work involving the use of X-ray equipment. Work includes the supervision and participation in developing, processing and maintenance of X-ray film. Supervision may be exercised over X-ray Technicians and a clerical support staff. Work is performed under the supervision of a physician and is reviewed for adequacy of X-ray photographs taken and safety precautions maintained. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Supervises and participates in the taking and processing of X-rays;

          Sets up and operates stationary, portable or mobile X-ray equipment as well as moving ancillary equipment in clinics and related facilities;

          Prepares and arranges patients for X-ray, fluoroscope, or other radiological examinations or treatments;

          May take radiographs for diagnostic purposes;

          Administers X-ray or other radiological therapy to patients under the supervision of a physician;

          Prepares developing solutions and processes X-ray film;

          Observes and records patients' condition and reports significant information;

          Oversees technical and clerical personnel to maintain efficient and safe conditions to patients and employees;

          Cleans and maintains X-ray and related equipment and makes minor adjustments and repairs.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the operation of X-ray equipment; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of X-ray equipment; thorough knowledge of the developing and processing of X-ray film; good knowledge of human anatomy; skill in the operation and care of X-ray photographic apparatus and equipment; ability to supervise the work of technical and clerical personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to understand, follow and give both oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and completion of an approved two (2) year course in X-ray technology, or an equivalent course of study as deemed comparable by the New York State Department of Health and two (2) years of experience as a Radiologic Technologist.

 

          PROMOTIONAL

          Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as an X-ray Technician.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment, and throughout employment in this title, employees must be registered by the New York State Department of Health to practice as a Radiologic Technologist.
