DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class supervises and coordinates the functions of all school health offices and rehabilitation programs. The incumbent is responsible for administrative functions, including planning, managing, evaluating, and development of health related programs. The work requires the exercise of professional judgment and initiative, and is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through conferences and reports. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Plans, assigns and supervises the work of medical staff, including Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Physical Therapists, and Occupa­tional Therapists;

          Coordinates training of medical staff;

          Maintains and interprets statistics on therapy services provided;

          Develops guidelines for provision of services;

          Revises occupational and physical therapy goals to be consistent with regulation changes;

          Schedules students and staff for services;

          Orders equipment, testing materials, and books for medical staff;

          Organizes and supervises monthly medical staff meetings;

          Coordinates the Occupational and Physical Therapy intern program, including assignments of interns and establishment of contracts;

          Evaluates the performance of staff through conferences, analysis of field reports, individual consultations and field observations;

          Reviews evaluations done by supervisory medical staff, and annual reports completed by nurses and Occupational and Physical Therapists;

          Conducts and/or arranges for in-service training for staff;

          Attends professional conferences and workshops;

          Establishes contracts with private agencies when needed, and follows up on services and payment;

          Attends administrative meetings to discuss health related policies and procedures;

    Serves as a member on agency committees for wellness and safety.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of efficient administrative techniques and procedures; through knowledge of  the principles, practices, materials and equipment used in medical treatment; thorough knowledge of the medical terminology used by medical personnel; thorough knowledge of sources of information, current literature and developments in the fields of nursing and occupational and physical therapies; ability to evaluate treatment plans and make appropriate recommendations; ability to plan, direct, evaluate and supervise a professional staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; ability to maintain complete and accurate records and prepare reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

         

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree, and six (6) years of experience as an Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, or Registered Nurse; two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity. 

 

          PROMOTIONAL

          Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Supervising Nurse, Supervising Occupational Therapist, Supervising Physical Therapist, or Supervising Occupational and Physical Therapist. 

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At time of appointment and during employment in this title candidates must possess a New York State license as an Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, or Registered Nurse.
