DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class is involved in assisting in carrying out a program of occupational therapy on a one-to-one or small group basis.  Work follows recognized practices in the occupational therapy field; and is performed under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists in the evaluation of occupational therapy needs;

          Provides, under supervision, direct occupational therapy on a one-to-one or small group basis;

          Participates in patient-related conferences with family members or agencies, as appropriate;

          Prepares reports and maintains on-going records of patients' work and progress;

          Assists in planning and teaching workshops and in-service courses for other employees and/or staff members.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Working knowledge of the principles, practices, materials and equipment used in occupational therapy; knowledge of the possible hazards to patients during therapy, and of the necessary precautionary and remedial measures; knowledge of the proper care and maintenance of apparatus and equipment used; ability to provide individual or group instruction to patients in an occupational therapy program; ability to establish good working relationships with patients and staff personnel; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Possession of a license to practice as an Occupational Therapy Assistant in the State of New York.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, candidates must be registered to practice as an Occupational Therapy Assistant in the State of New York.

 

Depending on assignment, candidates may be required, at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
