DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An
employee in this class supervises the activities of a number of Occupational
Therapists engaged in carrying out a program of therapeutic activities referred
or prescribed by a physician, to facilitate the rehabilitation and employment
of persons with a variety of physical, psychosocial and/or developmental
disabilities. Work of occupational therapy personnel is reviewed by periodic
reports, conferences and/or observations of techniques employed and results
obtained. General supervision is received from a physician through conferences
and reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises
the instruction of patients in arts, crafts and occupational skills which are
geared to a program of rehabilitation;
Reviews patient
rehabilitation programs set up by Occupational Therapists in accordance with physicians'
recommendations;
Participates in periodic
staff conferences with physicians, nurses, Occupational Therapists and other
medical personnel to discuss and plan therapy which will be of the greatest
physical and psychological benefit to the patient;
Supervises an in-service
training program for occupational therapy students and other personnel
affiliated with the program;
Periodically reviews the
complete records of each patient's work and progress and makes recommendations
when appropriate to the Occupational Therapist and to the physician in charge.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the principles, practices, materials and equipment used in
occupational therapy; thorough knowledge of the possible hazards to patients
during therapy, and of necessasry precautionary and remedial measures; thorough
knowledge of the proper care and maintenance of equipment used; ability to
evaluate the treatment plans of Occupational Therapists and make appropriate
recommendations as required; ability to supervise the activities of personnel
in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express
oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Two
(2) years of full-time paid experience (or its part-time equivalent) as an
occupational therapist.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years of permanent
competitive status as an Occupational Therapist.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Candidates
must possess and maintain a current license to practice occupational therapy
issued by the New York State Department of Education.
