DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists in organizing and conducting recreational activities for the residents of the Suffolk County Nursing Home or clients in a town senior citizen recreation program. The incumbent works under the direct supervision of a Therapeutic Activities Specialist or other administrative supervisor.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists in conducting planned recreational activities;

            Instructs and leads patients/clients in games and crafts;

            Encourages patients/clients to participate in recreational activities;

            Cares for equipment and recreational supplies;

            Accompanies patients/clients on field trips;

            Performs a variety of driving tasks including, but not limited to, driving patients/clients on field trips and picking up supplies from the community;

            Supervises patients/clients on field trips.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of games, hobbies and related recreational activities for the elderly; ability to create interest in the recreation program; ability to give instructions in various recreational activities; ability to deal tactfully with the elderly; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.

 

NOTE:  Relevant experience will be substituted for the high school diploma on a year-for-year basis.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment, and during employment in this title, employees will be required to possess a valid driver's license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State. The type of license required will be determined by the appointing authority with respect to the type of vehicle to be operated.
