DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class
directs the Hearing Screening Program at various Suffolk County Health Centers
and participates in the delivery of services to patients at these
facilities. The incumbent trains and
supervises personnel in the performance of hearing screening examinations,
performs specialized tests to diagnose and evaluate a patient's condition, and
assists the medical provider in determining a proper treatment course. The incumbent may be required to instruct
audiology students, medical personnel and other persons in the techniques
employed by the program. The work requires
the exercise of good judgment and initiative and is reviewed by the Director of
Patient Care Services or other administrative supervisor through conferences
and the achievement of desired objectives.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Trains
and supervises staff in the performance of hearing screening examinations;
Establishes
pass/fail criteria and appropriate referral procedures;
Performs
diagnostic evaluations on patients referred by medical staff;
Assists
the medical provider in the diagnosis and evaluation of hearing impairment and
in the selection of the proper treatment and/or rehabilitative course;
Conducts
interviews with patients and families recording their audiologic history, as
well as providing patient-family counseling and follow-up;
Coordinates
all referrals to appropriate outside agencies;
Maintains
records and prepares appropriate statistical reports;
Provides
educational programs for clinic staff and the community, as well as
presentations to family practice residents and medical students;
Oversees
the maintenance and calibration of equipment.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, methods and
materials used in audiological testing; knowledge of current literature and
sources of information concerning the field of Audiology; skill in evaluating
hearing disorders and in determining the proper course of action; ability to
establish and maintain cooperative relationships with patients, physicians,
nurses, professional colleagues and other persons associated with the Hearing
Screening Program; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both
orally and in writing; ability to prepare accurate statistical reports;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY
State with a Master's Degree in Audiology and five (5) years of post-master's
clinical experience, including at least three (3) years as a supervisor of a
department or director of audiological services in a public health setting.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment and throughout the term of
employment, employees must possess a New York State License in Audiology and a
valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
At the
time of appointment, the candidate must possess a Certificate of Clinical
Competence in Audiology issued by the American Speech-Language and Hearing
Association.
