DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class assists in treating patients with physical therapy techniques, or treats patients under the supervi­sion of a licensed Physical Therapist.  The incumbent assists in treatment, training, observation and evaluation, and maintains assistive devices for patients.  Supervision is received from a licensed Physical Therapist through oral and written progress reports, as well as through direct observation of the incumbent's performance.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Treats patients through the use of heat, cold, light, water, sound and massage;

            Positions patients and exercises them according to instructions;

            Trains patients in exercises, assists with ambulation and instructs in the use of walkers;

            Cares for patients' assistive devices such as braces and prostheses;

            Observes and reports patients' responses to the physical therapist;

            Assists a Physical Therapist in performing tests, evaluations and complex treatment procedures.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the safe operation of devices and equipment used in standard physical therapy treatments; good knowledge of the proper care and maintenance of such equipment; working knowledge of the techniques and goals of physical therapy treatments; working knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, especially the musculoskeletal, circulatory and nervous systems; working knowledge of psycho-social reactions to illness and injury; skill in the appli­cation of the various modalities employed in physical therapy, including massage and exercise procedures; ability to understand, interpret and adapt the Physical Therapist's oral or written instructions; ability to maintain accurate records; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Possession of a license to practice as a Physical Therapist Assistant in the State of New York.

             

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, candidates must be registered to practice as a Physical Therapist Assistant in the State of New York.
