DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in any of these classes performs professional medical services for departments and agencies of Suffolk County.  Positions in non-County agencies will be classified at the Physician I level only, while positions in County departments may be in any of the three titles based on the employee’s ability, experience and background and the associated level of responsibility.  Direction is received from administrative supervisors or higher level professional personnel who review work through reports and conferences.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Performs physical examinations for students and teachers in schools, patients at treatment centers, detainees in detention centers, inmate-patients at correctional facilities, athletes in sports activities, examinees for the civil service or other related examinations;

            Determines tolerance levels for daily individual doses of methadone for a methadone maintenance program;

            Diagnoses and treats patients within the area of competency; prescribes prescriptions for medicines and treatment;

            Plans and organizes medical, dental and nursing services at health-related facilities to provide efficient and adequate medical coverage for all patients;

            May be assigned to the Police Department and perform such duties as determining department members’ fitness for duty after illness or injury, or providing referral and consultation services pertaining to health related issues.

           

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices of the medical field to which incumbent is assigned; comprehensive knowledge in making diagnoses and prescribing medicine and treatment; comprehensive knowledge of current sources of information, literature and recent developments in the field of specialty; ability to tactfully obtain accurate information through interviews and observation, and to work with the general public and other governmental agencies; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to maintain accurate records and charts; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

                        PHYSICIAN I

                        Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of New York.

 

                        PHYSICIAN II

                        Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of New York.  Board Eligible in a recognized specialty such as Pediatrics, Preventive Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Family Medicine.

 

                        PHYSICIAN III

                        Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of New York.  Board Certified in a recognized specialty such as Pediatrics, Preventive Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Family Medicine.

           

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to be credentialed by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services’ Compliance Bureau Credentialing Committee, and maintain this credential throughout employment in the assignment.
