FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under supervision, an employee in this class assists in
delivering medical services to the community. This may entail physical
examinations, immunizations, validating working papers, prescribing medicine,
diagnosing cases, interpreting various physiological tests, administering
treatment or maintaining clinical surveillance of patients. The period of
internship in this title shall not exceed one (1) year. The employee exercises
some independent judgement, initiative and action. Work is subject to review by
a professional supervisor through conferences and progress reports. Does related
work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Performs physical examinations on patients in health
centers, the jail or related health care facilities, diagnoses existing medical
conditions and prescribes appropriate treatment under the supervision of a
senior medical staff person;
Administers immunizations, evaluates
laboratory and radiological findings, performs preplacement and periodic
physical examinations and conducts instruction seminars for nurses and other
physicians;
Instructs individuals and
organizations in methods to preserve health and prevent disease;
Supervises and instructs a small
nursing and clerical staff;
Assists in preparing and evaluating
various physiological tests such as X-ray, fluoroscope, blood, urine and liver.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of
general medicine; thorough knowledge in making diagnoses and prescribing
medicine and treatment; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and
written instructions; ability to instruct interns and nurses in methods of
medical treatment; ability to maintain a sympathetic attitude to geriatric and
institutional problems; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State
of New York.
NECESSARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Depending
upon assignment, candidates may be required to be credentialed by the Suffolk
County Department of Health Services’ Compliance Bureau Credentialing
Committee, and maintain this credential throughout employment in the
assignment.
