DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The duties of this position include directing the Health Services
Department's clinics for children.
Under direction of the Director of Maternal and Child Health, an
employee in this class directs the work of clinics held at various County
health centers on a rotating basis. The
work includes supervision of technical and clerical staff members, and is
subject to review through conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Directs and
participates in well-child clinics at various Suffolk County locations;
Participates in
specialized clinics for children, such as pediatric allergy and pediatric
cardiac;
Directs and
participates in the work of diagnostic and treatment clinics for children;
Refers patients
requiring surgery or specialized care not available at a Health Services
Department clinic to appropriate physicians;
Supervises and directs
the training of public health nurses, registered nurses, a nutritionist and
clerical workers;
Enforces the
provisions of the public health law and sanitary code.

CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of medicine;
thorough knowledge of state and local public health laws and sanitary codes;
thorough knowledge of the medical facilities and resources available in the
community; ability to plan and supervise the work of clinics to attain good
results and high staff morale; ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with the staff and to establish good professional
relationships with patients and their parents; physical condition commensurate
with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Possession of a
license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and;
Four years of
experience in the practice of medicine.
