DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direction an employee in this class examines eyes to locate visual problems, diseases, and other abnormal conditions.  Tests may be administered to determine depth and color perception and the ability to focus and coordinate the eyes.  Work is subject to review by an administrative superior through conferences and progress reports. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Examines eyes to determine visual efficiency and performance;

         May test for proper depth and color perception and the ability to focus and coordinate the eyes;

         May instruct individuals or groups in methods to preserve eye health;

         May refer individuals with visual problems to the appropriate medical personnel.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of optometry; good knowledge of current developments, literature and sources of information in the field of optometry; ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports; ability to gain the confidence and cooperation of patients; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN COMPETITIVE

         Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Optometry.

        

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must be eligible for a license to practice Optometry as issued by the State of New York at the time of appointment.
