DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs general dentistry at a County facility.  The incumbent acts with considerable independence in diagnosing and treating patients.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Dental Director-Health Services.  Complicated cases are handled in consultation.  Supervision is exercised over assigned Dental Hygienists and Dental Assistants.  Performance is reviewed through conferences, reports and appraisal of services rendered at the facility.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Treats patients in all areas of general dentistry;

            Diagnoses dental problems and prepares treatment plans;

            Explains treatment plans to patients;

            Educates patients with respect to proper oral care;

            Participates in the dental program's quality assurance review.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of general dentistry; good knowledge of dental facilities and resources available in the community; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with municipal officials, supervisors, co-workers and the general public; ability to supervise staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.  Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Doctor of Dentistry degree and one (1) year of experience in the practice of dentistry.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

            At the time of appointment, the candidate must be licensed by New York State to practice dentistry.  This license must be maintained throughout employment in this title.

            At the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.

            Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to be credentialed by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services’ Compliance Bureau Credentialing Committee, and maintain this credential throughout employment in the assignment.
