DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class plans, directs and coordinates the emergency medical services programs within Suffolk County. The incumbent is responsible for the technical direction and management of programs created to respond to the emergency health needs of the County. Work includes the assessment of the quality, productivity, and availability of services. Supervision is exercised over a professional and paraprofessional staff. Performance is subject to review by an administrative director through conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Directs and supervises medical practices and procedures related to emergency response and treatment;

          Implements medical policy and maintains standards of performance;

          Provides general supervision and administrative direction for all personnel assigned to the program;

          Works with other agencies in promoting the aims of the program.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices of medicine as they relate to emergency medical treatment; comprehensive knowledge of state and local laws affecting health services; thorough knowledge of current developments, literature and sources of information in emergency medical treatment; ability to plan and supervise the work of medical and non­medical personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and four (4) years of experience in emergency medical services.
