DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general direction, an employee in this class supervises the medical aspects of the Drug Treatment Program of Drug Abuse Services.  The incumbent is responsible for planning, coordinating and supervising the medical and psy­chiatric treatment provided at the drug abuse clinics administered by the Drug Abuse Services of the Department of Health Services.  The employee is re­sponsible for screening, diagnosing and treating drug addicts in outpatient clinics and for supervising a staff of professional personnel.  Performance is subject to review by the Director of Drug Abuse Services.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Monitors symptomatology of patients under chemotherapy in outpatient clin­ics;

          Performs routine examinations and visual checks of patients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment;

          Establishes medical and psychiatric policies and procedures to be followed in conjunction with the narcotic and addiction control program;

          Prescribes and evaluates physiological tests such as X-ray, blood and urine analysis for clinic patients;

          Determines and prescribes appropriate daily dosage of methadone hydrochloride;

          Supervises physicians, nurses and other professionals in the medical and psychiatric functions of the clinics.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of medicine and of the treatment of opiate addicts in particular; thorough knowledge of the uses and abuses of narcotic and addictive drugs; thorough knowledge of programs at work in the community for the assistance of addicts; thorough knowledge of all statutes governing the treatment of addiction and the dispensing of narcotic medication; ability to establish and maintain a good liaison with other agencies similarly engaged in the medical and psychiatric treatment of drug addicts; ability to plan and supervise the work of professional and technical staff members in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale;  physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and four years of experience as a physician involved in a drug treatment program.
