DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Assists in the direction of general medical care and treatment of
physically ill patients at the Suffolk Nursing Home. Under direction, an employee in this class is responsible for
directing the program of medical services for the patients at a county
institution for the chronically ill.
Supervision is exercised over medical, nursing and technical personnel. Work is performed under the supervision of
the Medical Services Director who reviews work through conferences and
observation. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Plans and supervises
medical and nursing services at a county institution to provide efficient and
adequate medical coverage for all patients;
Examines patients,
diagnoses illness and prescribes treatment;
Refers patients to
specialists when condition of patient requires specialized medical care;
Informs relatives of
the condition and planned treatment of patients;
Reviews requests for
authorization of treatment submitted by private physicians of welfare clients
and determines whether they are within department policy and established State
standards;
Confers with
Caseworkers on individual cases.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of medicine;
thorough knowledge of geriatrics and institutional health programs; thorough
knowledge of recognized treatment programs for the chronically ill; ability to
administer the program of a large institution smoothly and efficiently; ability
to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, County
officials and other physicians; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Possession of a
license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and; three years of
experience in the practice of medicine.
